Obiettivi
Formativi del Dottorato in Scienze Molecolari Il nuovo Dottorato inter-facoltà in Scienze Molecolari, promosso dai Dipartimenti di Scienze Chimiche e di Scienze Farmaceutiche dell’Università di Trieste, intende proporsi come un centro di formazione avanzata, aperto ai giovani laureati italiani e stranieri, con l'obiettivo principale di preparare dottori di ricerca di elevata qualificazione scientifica, capacità di ricerca autonoma e di organizzazione della ricerca nell'ambito della Chimica e delle Scienze del Farmaco. Oltre alle competenze di tipo più prettamente chimico, esso raccoglie infatti anche tutte le competenze necessarie alla progettazione di nuovi farmaci, alla loro sintesi mediante metodi tradizionali ed innovativi, ed allo studio delle loro proprietà tecnologiche. Oltre a fornire competenze scientifiche e tecniche specifiche nelle tematiche di ricerca, il Dottorato si propone di inserire i Dottorandi in un ambiente scientificamente stimolante, composto da dottorandi e giovani ricercatori provenienti dall'Italia e dall'estero. Organizzazione
del Dottorato Il Corso ha durata triennale ed è articolato nei due indirizzi di Scienze Chimiche e Scienze del Farmaco. La gestione scientifica e didattica del Dottorato è affidata ad un Collegio Docenti composto da 15 membri provenienti dai due Dipartimenti proponenti, in rappresentanza delle varie tematiche di ricerca. La formazione del dottorando comporta una specifica attività didattica e la partecipazione attiva a programmi di ricerca sviluppati nell'ambito dei Dipartimenti proponenti. Ogni dottorando sarà affidato ad un Tutore, scelto fra i membri dei Dipartimenti, che ne curerà il percorso scientifico e didattico. Sono previsti periodi di ricerca all’estero, nell’ambito delle esistenti collaborazioni, della durata complessiva di un anno. Ogni dottorando sarà incoraggiato a partecipare annualmente ad almeno un Congresso nazionale o internazionale, portandovi un contributo scientifico. Tematiche di
Ricerca I progetti di ricerca attivi nei due Dipartimenti sono numerosi e si articolano nell'ambito delle grandi aree disciplinari della Chimica e delle Scienze Farmaceutiche. Ognuna delle tematiche generali di seguito elencate si articola in numerose linee di ricerca specifiche, che possono essere argomento di un dottorato triennale E' importante inoltre sottolineare che su molte delle tematiche di ricerca sono in atto varie collaborazioni nazionali e internazionali e diversi progetti europei. Chimica Teorica - Studi computazionali sulla struttura elettronica di
molecole e cluster con metodi ab initio e funzionale densità Spettroscopia Molecolare Spettroscopia vibrazionale e dinamica reticolare di
cristalli molecolari. Studio di proprietà ottiche nell' infrarosso di
materiali ferroelettrici. Studi SERS e SEIRA dell'interazione di molecole
eterocicliche con superfici metalliche. Chimica Inorganica e Bio-inorganica - Elettrochimica di metalloproteine: studio della
relazione struttura–reattività nel citocromo c. Catalisi- Sintesi e caratterizzazione di composti organometallici
di iridio e rodio da impiegare come catalizzatori omogenei per la oligo- e
poli-merizzazione di acetileni. Biocristallografia - Espressione, cristallizzazione e determinazione strutturale a raggi X di proteine naturali e miniaturizzate. Chimica
Supramolecolare - Sintesi e caratterizzazione di sistemi supramolecolari
contenenti centri metallici e porfirine. Nanostrutture e Nanotecnologie - Sviluppo e caratterizzazione di materiali
nanostrutturati per reazioni di conversione di inquinanti gassosi e per la
produzione di idrogeno.
Chimica Organica e Bio-organica - Sintesi di ammino- e cheto-esteri e loro
biotrasformazioni, mediate da lievito di birra e da altri microorganismi e da
idrolasi commerciali per la sintesi di lattoni e lattami enantiomericamente
puri, potenzialmente attivi come antibiotici e antitumorali. Biocatalisi in mezzi non convenzionali - Idrolasi in mezzi non convenzionali. - Impiego di cellule intere in solvente organico. Chimica Analitica ed Ambientale
- Studio di problematiche analitiche di rilevanza
ambientale e di metodi avanzati di trattamento dei dati sperimentali al fine
di ottenere modelli per la distribuzione spaziale e temporale di specie
chimiche negli ecosistemi, negli ambienti urbani ed in quelli industriali. - Studio sul rischio di permeazione cutanea dei tossici industriali. Chimica Farmaceutica - Ricerca e sviluppo di ligandi per i recettori del sistema peptidergico. - Progettazione, sintesi e valutazione biologica di eterociclici azotati quali antagonisti potenti e selettivi per i vari sottotipi recettoriali adenosinici. - Ricerca e sviluppo di ligandi per i recettori sigma. Farmaci attivi a livello mitocondriale - Inibitori delle cicloossigenasi e delle lipossigenasi. - Sintesi e studi farmacologici di sostanze a struttura
imidazobenzodiazepinica con spiccata selettività per i recettori
benzodiazepinici periferici.
Chemioterapici - Progettazione, sintesi e valutazione biologica di
composti ad attività antifungina ed antimicobatterica. Chimica Estrattiva - Isolamento e determinazione strutturale di principi attivi ad attività inibitoria della trombina da Basidiomiceti e ad attività ipoglicemizzante da leguminose. Tecnologie farmaceutiche innovative - Sistemi nanoparticellari ibridi metallo-polimero organico (in particolare microsfere di poli-ε-caprolattone ricoperte con nanosfere di rame metallico). - Formulazioni solide a rilascio modificato di principi attivi. - Applicazioni tecnologiche-farmaceutiche dei fluidi
supercritici. Sviluppo di forme farmaceutiche solide orali. Farmacocinetica - Progettazione, sintesi e valutazione delle
caratteristiche farmacocinetiche di coniugati farmaco – polimero. Valutazioni Annuali Ogni dottorando, con cadenza annuale, è tenuto a presentare una relazione scritta (in italiano o in inglese) sull'attività di ricerca svolta, che verrà valutata in una riunione pubblica del Collegio dei Docenti. Il dottorando inoltre illustra annualmente i risultati della propria ricerca tramite una relazione pubblica, nella quale indica anche a grandi linee come intende sviluppare la ricerca nel periodo successivo. Si prevede di istituire una o due giornate dedicate alle relazioni annuali dei dottorandi nella forma di un mini-simposio. Il Collegio Docenti valuterà l'attività didattica svolta dai dottorandi, la loro produttività scientifica(pubblicazioni scientifiche che abbiano come coautori iscritti al corso di dottorato), la partecipazione dei dottorandi a scuole o congressi nazionali e/o internazionali e l'eventuale contributo scientifico. Inoltre, verranno verificati e documentati eventuali periodi trascorsi dai dottorandi al di fuori delle strutture dipartimentali. L'approvazione da parte del Collegio della citata attività da parte del Dottorando, insieme alla valutazione dell'attività didattica e gli eventuali compiti di assistenza agli studenti dei corsi di laurea in chimica, farmacia, scienze e tecnologie farmaceutiche, rappresentano il requisito necessario per l'ammissione a cicli successivi. Sbocchi Professionali Il nuovo Dottorato presenta la specificità di essere l'unico corso di Dottorato in regione ad ampio spettro nel campo delle scienze molecolari, con indirizzi nell'ambito della Chimica e delle Scienze del Farmaco. Le collaborazioni esistenti tra i docenti del Dottorato e varie istituzioni accademiche, di ricerca ed industriali, sia nazionali che estere, favoriscono l'inserimento dei dottorati nel mondo del lavoro ed accademico attraverso borse di studio, contratti, assegni di ricerca e posizioni equivalenti. Objectives of the Ph. D. Course in Molecular Sciences The
new inter-Faculty Ph. D. Course in Molecular Sciences, promoted by the Departments
of Chemical Sciences and of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of
Trieste, aims to become a centre for advanced academic formation,
open to young Italian and foreigner graduates. Its primary objective is that
of forming doctors with a sound scientific qualification, capable of
performing autonomous research within the fields of Chemistry and
Pharmaceutical Sciences. In fact, in addition to the main fields of
chemistry, the Ph. D. curriculum comprises also topics related to the design
of new drugs, to their synthesis with traditional and innovative methods, and
to the investigation of their technological properties. The
Course in Molecular Sciences, beside providing the students with advanced
scientific and technical skills specific of their research topics, aims to
introduce them in a scientifically stimulating environment, made by Ph. D.
students and young researchers from Italy and other countries. Organization of the Ph.
D. Course The Course has a duration of 3 years and is organized in two
curricula: Chemical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The scientific and
didactic aspects of the Course are managed by a Board of Teachers, composed
by 15 members from the two supporting Departments and representing the main
research topics. The training of each Ph. D. student comprises attending to
specific teaching activity and the active participation to one of the
research lines developed in the supporting Departments. Each student will be
assigned to a Tutor, belonging to one of the two Departments, who will be
responsible for his/her scientific and didactic career. The students, within
their research projects, may be allowed to spend a maximum of 1 year in a
laboratory in a foreign Country. They will be encouraged to attend to at
least one national or international Symposium each year, where they will
present a scientific contribution.
Research Topics Numerous research projects are being pursued in the two supporting Departments within the broad scientific areas of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and are thus strictly related to the topics of the Ph. D. Course in Molecular Sciences. Each of the research topics listed below comprises several specific research projects that might be the subject of a triennial doctorate. It is also worth stressing here that, in most cases, the research projects are being performed within well established national and international collaborations as well as specific European projects. Theoretical Chemistry
- Computational studies on the electronic structure of molecules and clusters by ab initio and density functional methods. - Theoretical description of the photo-emission and photo-absorption processes for molecules in gaseous phase or adsorbed on surfaces. - Development of algorithms and their implementation in FORTRAN parallel programs for the descriptions of electronic continuum with DFT and TDDFT methods. Molecular Spectroscopy -
Vibrational spectroscopy and reticular dynamic of molecular crystals.
Investigation of optical properties in the infrared region of ferro-electrical
materials. SERS and SIERA studies concerning the interactions of heterocyclic
molecules with metallic surfaces. -
Investigation of lyotropic liquid crystals through NMR spectroscopy of
quadrupolar nuclei. -
Determination of the local structure in disordered or non-crystalline
materials by EXAFS and XANES spectroscopies using the dedicated beamline at
the synchrotron of Trieste, ELETTRA. Inorganic and

catalytic activity. Annual Assessments The Ph. D. students
will submit every year to the Board of Teachers a written report (either in
Italian or in English) on their
research projects. In addition, they will illustrate the advancement
and future developments of their projects through a public oral presentation
in front of the Board. In the future
the Ph. D. students will present their annual reports within a dedicated one
or two-day mini-symposium. The Board of Teachers will assess yearly the
didactic activity of the students, their scientific achievements (scientific
publications co-authored by the students), their participation to schools and
national or international symposia and their scientific contributions. The
Board will also verify the documented stages performed by the students in
facilities outside the Departments. Board approval of the
scientific and didactic activities of each student is required for granting
admission to the following year of the Ph. D. Course. The Board might also
assign to the Ph. D. students, with their consensus, duties of teaching
assistance to undergraduate students of Chemistry, Pharmacy and
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies. Career DevelopmentsThe
new Ph. D. Course has the specificity of being the only entity, in this part
of Italy, for providing advanced academic formation and training in the broad
field of molecular sciences, with specific curricula in Chemistry and in
Pharmaceutical Sciences. It is expected that, at the end of their studies,
the doctors will find qualified job opportunities in the academy, in private
research organizations and in industrial companies through post-doctoral
fellowships, research contracts and equivalent positions. They will be facilitated in this process by
the well-established net of national and international collaborations
existing between the scientists involved in the Ph. D. Course and numerous
academic, research and industrial entities, both in Italy and abroad. |

objective is to provide basics of solid state chemistry on the following topics:
bonding in the solids, Fermi level, conducting, semi- and insulating solids,
structural properties of ionic solids, lattice energy, defects in solids, solid
state reactions (Kroger-Vink notation), surface, surface notation, surface
relaxation induced by chemisorption.
Interaction
of molecules with solids, adsorption energy (Lenard-Jones diagrams), adsorption
